  • Welcome to my blog!

Hi! I'm Traci. I'm a Registered Nurse who loves quilting, knitting, cross stitch, and the great outdoors. In my pre-scrubs life, I owned Real Photography, and you can still see my old wedding and portrait photography site here .

I've created a map that shows links to our camping/hiking/general family fun review posts that you can find here. It's pretty much the coolest thing on this site. Thanks, Google!

I great big puffy heart *love* comments, so please let me know you visited! I try to always reply!

Ellie just sat herself up from laying down for the first time! I went in to get her from her nap and she was sitting up to greet me!

a hooty place : my first finished mug rug!

Remember this gorgeous stack of fabric?  Today it turned into this:

And then this:

My first mug rug!  Mug rugs became uber-popular among flickr quilters this year–think of them as mini placemats or maxi coasters.  They are super fun to make because they are a mini quilt, so anything you’ve wanted to try out, can be tried out here with a minimum time/materials investment.  I tried out some wonky piecing on the back and love it!

(To me, the only problem with backs as cute as the front is that they look strange if the quilt/mug rug is quilted with anything other than all over stippling.  I wish I’d taken a picture of the back BEFORE I quilted it, because it was cuter that way!

A couple of action shots with a few of my favorite mugs:

Kona cotton solids: coffee, tangerine, lagoon, snow, papaya, and lime green.  Yellow polka dots are Robert Kaufman pimatex, green circles are Riley Blake cheery circles, and the green polka dots are Riley Blake as well.  Owls are Urban Zoology.

I am having a lot of fun practicing my free motion machine applique!

Mom - You put me in a very Hooty place! I hope this is my Christmas gift… ;P

These are wonderful! Love the splashes of color you added to Hooty! You are so artistic! And I continue to be super-jealous of your stipling!!!

Erica - Holy cow, that’s adorable!

Whitney - This is ABSOLUTELY adorable! I think I’m going to have to copy. 🙂

Susie - I love me some owls- way way cute, Traci! You’re giving me the itch to grab some fabric and get busy sewing, even though I don’t know how!

Jen - This is so cute! OK, so I’m just getting on board with these mug rugs. i love them they are so cute. i tried making one a couple days ago. Question for you..I see you mention above that you free motion appliqued the owl. it looks great! I’ve never really appliqued and I’m seeing all this great stuff on all these mug rugs. Are most of them free motion appliqued? I’m confused on your post because of the hoop. Do you hoop the fabric then applique it on your machine? See…told you I’m lost on the applique thing! The one i worked on a couple days ago, I just sandwiched the whole thing and then free motion appliqued through all 3 layers. But of course, now the back looks pretty crazy. i just didn’t know how else to do it! Guess that’s where the hoop comes in! Please inform me how to do this! Thanks!!

Fiona Leontis/Patchworkdelights - This is an adorable mug rug, very very cute!

Boo at the Zoo – Halloween part one.  Ellie’s Momo still needs wings, and Will The Avatar’s staff wasn’t dry enough to make the trip, but here’s a sneak peek at their Avatar: The Last Airbender cuteness!

halloween prequel : homemade momo and aang costumes

Tonight was our annual trip to Boo at the Zoo, a Halloween event at our local zoo.  The kids dress up and trick-or-treat around various stations set up by local businesses.  It’s a nice way to extend the fun of Halloween.  But for some reason, I let the deadlines sneak up on me a little.  In my head, I had until Halloween to get their costumes done.  In reality, I had one week less time!

I finished the majority of Will’s costume a couple of weeks ago.  I thought it was going to be a major ordeal (since I was going to make pants, a cape, and a shirt–all without a pattern).  But it wasn’t so bad.  Ellie’s costume, I thought, was going to be easy, so I’d saved it for last.  After all, the major part of it (the bunting) was done–I was just going to add ears, a tail, and some additional details to transform her into Momo.

As it turned out, Ellie’s costume was a major pain in my butt.  Nothing went right, and I almost quit halfway through and had her wear the Panda costume I poured blood, sweat, and tears into when Will was her age.  But we’ve been talking about them doing this since before she was born, so I rallied.

Last night after my photo shoot and dinner, Will and I ran out to try once again to find some red tights for his costume.  I also remembered that he still needed a hat of some sort for his blue arrow (the original plan had been to shave his head, but with our Seattle trip coming up AND how cold it can be around here, I chickened out and decided a hat would be better).  It was a race against time, but we managed to finally find red tights (in the women’s section at Target), and scored at the Halloween store–they were still open (it was 9:15) and had a bald cap.  Perfect!  We celebrated our success with a visit to Cold Stone Creamery and had a truly wonderful evening together.

This afternoon it was back to work on Ellie’s Momo costume and Aang’s staff and hat.  His staff wasn’t dry in time for the zoo, we didn’t have time to make Ellie’s wings, and I botched the trimming of Will’s hat…so I’m calling this a rough sneak peek at their costumes.  Version 2.0 for Halloween will be just a tiny bit better.

I am THRILLED with how Will’s costume came out.  He looks just like Aang!  His pants were riding a little high tonight (they are supposed to be lower so they bunch more around his knees), and I need to add some interfacing so the sash doesn’t keep folding up and disappearing, but overall it turned out so much better than I’d hoped.  Ellie’s costume?  Well…she looks like a hobo bunny.  But even though no one at the zoo knew what she was (even those who correctly identified Will as The Avatar), they still oohed and ahhed over how cute she was ‘with those ears.’  If she couldn’t be correctly identified, at least she was cute.

Mom - Oh, you ROCKED those costumes! They are amazing! (And I love how you called Ellie a hobo bunny!) But she does look like that creature I’ve seen sometimes–well done!

Have to say it again–they look AMAZING! I just can’t get over the fact that you had no patterns!!

Bernadette - I LOVE the last pic of Ellie!
May steal her on Sunday 🙂

Heather Mieloszyk - Love the costumes! And well, the photography is outstanding! Do you have a pattern for the Momo costume? My 7 year old would like to be Momo for Halloween next year. (Never too soon to start!)

Dani - Have you gotten rid of your Momo costume? It is superb! Do you have a pattern for it? Thanks!
