  • Welcome to my blog!

Hi! I'm Traci. I'm a Registered Nurse who loves quilting, knitting, cross stitch, and the great outdoors. In my pre-scrubs life, I owned Real Photography, and you can still see my old wedding and portrait photography site here .

I've created a map that shows links to our camping/hiking/general family fun review posts that you can find here. It's pretty much the coolest thing on this site. Thanks, Google!

I great big puffy heart *love* comments, so please let me know you visited! I try to always reply!

a farmhouse cafe apron

I love this fabric line from Timeless Treasures–it appeals perfectly to my inner farmwife!  This apron is based on this free apron pattern (I love that it uses a fat quarter and a half yard of fabric–it’s a great way to use up any cute-but-don’t-know-what-to-do-with-them fat quarters).  I don’t like unlined aprons, though, so I made it reversible (make two front pieces, sew them right sides together on the sides and bottom, then turn right side out and continue with the instructions).  I also added interfacing to the waistband because I don’t like it when the waistband gets all crinkled and squished by my chub.  Not that the recipient needs this precaution–this is going to my Nana, who weighs 30 pounds soaking wet while carrying a 30lb suitcase.

While I’m on the subject of aprons, are there any A is for Apron book owners out there?  I have been so intensely disappointed in it–the aprons are adorable, but none of the patterns are to scale so you’ll have to scan them in, resize, and print at your own dime (and then tape it all together).  Basically a worthless book.  Anyone have any workarounds to this other than ‘eyeball it and then create your own’?  I took the book to Kinkos (dear FedEx–I will never not call it Kinkos no matter how many times you change the sign on the door), but the girl was clueless and it was going to cost me about $10 to have even a single apron pattern made for a book I already purchased!  Which is why I am all over the free apron patterns right now!

Kati S. - Cute, cute apron. I have seen that pattern before, but never got around to making it. No help on the apron book, though, sorry. I’m not a big apron person, but really should become one since my kids are always stealing my kitchen towels, and I never have them when I need them. My youngest actually raids my kitchen towel drawer and carries around clean washcloths. She even insists on sleeping with them! At least they are clean.

Christie, Describe Happy - Thanks for sharing this!! What a cute apron! I have a party to help with on Saturday (I spend a lot of it pulling things out of the oven for nibbling) and it will be cute to wear an apron like this for the event!

Kirsten Ott - TOTALLY agree about the A is for Apron Book! Love this pattern, I am looking for a mans full size apron, I keep trying to talk them into half aprons and they aren’t having it! I feel the same way ever time I see that Fedex sign on the Kinkos!

Staci - What a beautiful apron. I only have made one apron before and I didn’t really like how it came out…I’ll have to try the pattern you used next time. 🙂

christmas music a la will

Each year Will seems to misunderstand the lyrics of whatever song he wanders around singing the most.  Last year it was “almost fun, it is to ride on a one horse open sleigh.”  This year he’s all about “he’s making a list, he’s checking things out…”

We love it.

best mail day in the history of forever.

Yesterday I got not one, but TWO amazing packages in the mail.  From the Pillow Talk Swap, Kirsten at Three Dancing Magpies sent me this gorgeous linen and velveteen pillow and a whole mess of goodies (button kits to make huge gorgeous fabric buttons, a Starbucks gift card, a Christmas charm pack, the pillow form and some AMH dobby dots in blue!):

Photos just don’t do this pillow justice.  It’s a very tactile pillow and the velveteen and rich dark chocolate make is so luscious you just want to squish into it forever!  This pillow is living in my studio until Christmas is over, and it is going to make it a lot easier to put the Christmas stuff away knowing I have this pillow waiting!  (And I will have fun making some companions for this guy!)

As if that wasn’t enough, another big package arrived for me from Kelly that had me squealing as I opened it.  Kelly and I are old friends from the scrapbooking world and we arranged a Christmas themed pillow swap as a spin-off of the Pillow Talk Swap.  Kelly has been posting pictures of this pillow as she created it and I was drooling and gushing all over it.  It is so fantastic and it’s just genius.  It was so fun to sit last night and look at all the different fabric lines represented in the pillow.  They coordinate so perfectly and are just so merry and jolly!  I love looking at the quilting and measurements of the strips to see how Kelly pulled it off!  (I love the logistical little details like the strips between letters being half as wide as the strips between “Ho”s .)  She also sent me a charm pack and the pillow form–how generous are my swap partners?!

It is happily installed on the sofa for the rest of the Christmas season:

I really loved these swaps.  I had so much fun opening these boxes and I think the best part of the swaps was seeing something new.  These pillows were both different from what I would have made and I love getting to see and learn from them!  Kirsten’s pillow with the gorgeous brown linen has me itching to expand my linen routine, and I never would have understood the AMH Innocent Crush love if I hadn’t gotten to see them in person put together like this.  Rich and luscious!!  I’ve been shying away from quilting on my pillows because I haven’t really been able to ‘see’ how to design the quilting.  So I loved seeing how the gorgeous two squares of quilting on Kirsten’s pillow add so much, and how Kelly quilting around the Ho Ho Hos to make them pop.  Kelly has me thinking about piecing and letters in a whole different way, not to mention thinking outside the box (or pillow form!) for more creative pillow openings.  Both pillows have me coming back to them, looking at them, examining how they were made, and so blown away by the creativity and generosity of my swap partners!  I’m like a little kid on Christmas morning, so amazed by how Santa pulled it all off, and wondering how on Earth I could be worthy of such presents!

jenny - oh wow, you did have a fabulous mail day! i saw both of these on flickr and really really liked them!

Anne - Adorable children! Love the pillow.

I guess my favorite tradition, then, is opening gifts early!

Jennifer Woodward - When my children were young (they are adults now) they would create a Christmas program for me and my husband. Some years it was the nativity, some years they made up a Christmas play, other years it would be all music they played on their instruments. Hours of preparation went into it and they even made programs which, of course, I saved them all. So now I’m hoping that soon I can can enjoy this same type of tradition with my grandchildren.

Cheer!

Well, a few years back I was so overwhelmed by Christmas – just plain frustrated. I really do not like shopping. Really. So I took some time to think over the whole Christmas thing, and now I look forward to Christmas because I’ve discovered that I am very rich. Not in money, you understand, but in creativity. And the things that are hand-made are cherished by my friends and family. So I’ve made it my Christmas tradition to make stuff for Christmas gifts.

I love seeing all the things my fam is thankful for — that bird begins to look like Maisy from the Dr. Seuss (?) story: It has so many feathers, it looks like it’d fall over backwards if it tried to move!

My favorite holiday tradition is probably the “gift-time dance.” We open gifts Christmas eve, in the evening. At about 1pm, my father (who is now retired) will begin asking “can we open the gifts yet?” My mother will respond “not until dinner’s done!”

Then the dinner will be eaten, but ALL the dishes need to be washed before the presents can be unwrapped. Of course we enjoy dragging this out to torture my father. Then we all go sit in the room by the Christmas tree. We go to hand out the first gift…Oops, someone has to run to use the bathroom, we have to wait.

It’s so silly, but it’s something I look forward to, EVERY YEAR. My father, the eternal 5 year old.

Thanks again for a fun giveaway!

Kat - What beautiful fabrics!

My favourite holiday tradition is our insane tree decorating – we have acquired so many decorations over the years (some beautiful traditional ones, some terrible tacky fun ones) that we no longer go for beautiful. We go for masses of stuff! There is an ongoing competition between me and my sister to see who can put just one more item on the tree before things start to fall off!

sean - I don’t enter these things that often because I don’t have any luck. But my daughter said I should so here goes, in the past she had me enter for her. This time I hope to win something for my wife.

Finished! Pillow Fabric Button Closure

For this pillow, I knew I wanted it to have a really special show-stopping back, since the front is so clean and simple.

And I did pull it off exactly as I’d planned, but man–for a little bit there while I was doing the elastic cording I had some SERIOUS doubts.  (And a lot of “WHY did I do FIVE buttons?!”)  I’m super excited, though, and think that it makes the back something you could show off as the front!

I love the look but don’t think I’ll be making it a staple in my pillow routine!

Kati S. - I love the buttons. What a great idea!

Katie - Wow – this looks great with the buttons. Love it!

Kate - Love both the front and the back! What a great idea!

h2ogirl76 - I adore the look of this. . and the colors are perfect

“ELOISE MARIE!” Will commanded at Ellie in the living room.

“Hey—what’s going on in there?” I asked as I walked over from the kitchen.

“Ellie is eating the tree,” Will explained.

Ellie was drooling all over a pine needle she’d picked up from the floor.

The white fir sure is more fragrant than the frasier firs we normally get…but it drops a TON of needles.
