  • Welcome to my blog!

Hi! I'm Traci. I'm a Registered Nurse who loves quilting, knitting, cross stitch, and the great outdoors. In my pre-scrubs life, I owned Real Photography, and you can still see my old wedding and portrait photography site here .

I've created a map that shows links to our camping/hiking/general family fun review posts that you can find here. It's pretty much the coolest thing on this site. Thanks, Google!

I great big puffy heart *love* comments, so please let me know you visited! I try to always reply!

smocked dress from weekend sewing (by heather ross)

I finished Ellie’s ‘smocked dress’ from Weekend Sewing (since I’m busiest in the summer I am trying to get all of the summer clothes that I want to make for her done in the winter).  But before going further I will say that this isn’t a smocked dress, it’s a shirred dress…and if you don’t differentiate, even though the pattern is called a smocked dress, it seems that people get really mad about it and curse all your future projects to hell (seriously–I’ve seen some really nasty arguments about this on other blogs).

It was so easy and fast and as I made it I thought “this would be such a great method for making myself a skirt” and then I was cruising through my google reader today and saw that Anna Marie Horner just posted a tutorial on just that very thing.   So now I’m planning on trying to bust out a couple of skirts for me and some dresses for Ellie, because we just booked a trip to Disneyland!  I am so excited to leave the land of temps in the negative!

(In the interest of full disclosure, not only is it not REALLY smocked, it’s also not REALLY done.  I am going to use a rolled hem edge to finish off the raw ends of the straps, but I wanted to save it for a day when I’d be pulling out the serger for more projects than just four tiny hems.)

I didn’t have the heart to ask her to model for it since it was blizzard-ing all day (though it probably wouldn’t have mattered to Ellie, the child who refuses socks and hats no matter what).  She’s getting to be such a big girl, though–check her out!  And while I was upstairs I believe that Will witnessed her first long period of time unassisted stand because he shouted up “MOM!  Ellie’s BALANCING all by herself!  It’s amazing!  I let go and she’s BALANCING!  You have to see this!”  but I was cleaning up the pee he’d left for me all over the toilet seat, so I missed it.

(And as a side note, this is my third project from Weekend Sewing and I couldn’t be happier with the book.  There are still a ton of patterns that I want to make and I love the illustrated instructions.  I’m really happy with it and highly recommend it as an awesome general sewing and pattern book!)

Lee - That’s so adorable! Good job! The shirring or smocking or whatever it is looks difficult.

Jenniffier - I too saw the tutorial and now I have a desire to sew up some skirts for myself. Cute dress!

Amanda Snyder - Hi I was wondering if you could help me I have the Weekend Sewing book and I can’t seem to find the pattern for this smocked sundress- I would love to make it! It’s not included on the pattern sheets?

Thanks!

Ellie has a cold.  A snot-running-down-her-face kind of cold.  Which prompts lots of “ELLIE!  You’re GROSS!” from Will as he then runs to get her a tissue.

yard sale wrap skirt from heather ross’s weekend sewing

Look what I made!

It ties.

It twirls.

It has a rolled hem and serged seams!

That’s right–I broke out my brand new (old) serger for this one!  After months of Craigslist stalking (seriously–I logged on every night for months to do national searches) I found a Baby Lock Imagine on Craigslist for $300 (they retail for 5-6 times that amount, but I’d heard rumors of people picking them up for crazy cheap on Craigslist, so I was determined to find a good deal).  Best of all, it was 5 minutes from my grandmother’s house in Washington state, so I asked her pick it up to mail to me since so many craigslist people get weird when you ask them to ship something.  (Now I just have to figure out something awesome to serge for her as a thank you!)  🙂

It came with the $200 accessory foot bundle and all the original manuals and accessories.  When I took it in to be serviced you could tell they couldn’t tell whether to marry me for my awesome bargain finding or arrest me for totally ripping someone off.   😛   I totally love it and am already working on a dress for Ellie as well as another skirt from this pattern with a few alterations (as you can see, it’s a pretty retro skirt with a super high waist and long hem–I’m going to shorten it by 5″ and halve the height of the waistband).  Since there’s no tension to mess with on the serger and the threading is taken care of by the amazing jet air technology of robots, it’s pretty much idiot proof!  Watch out world…I’m about to serge the crap out of some stuff.

Alli - Ooh, yay for your awesome serger find!

I know it’s not really useful now, but just in case it might be useful in the future, here’s an article that describes how to use Google Reader to get your Craigslist searches done without having to repeat it everyday: http://www.deannorman.com/blog/how-to-efficiently-find-deals-on-craigslist-using-google-reader.html

I made myself a feed to keep an eye on fabric being sold in my state. 🙂

Susanne - Very cute. I’m SO jealous of your auto threading. I have auto tension, but someone forgot to tell her that before boxing her up…so I always have to do a test strip. Can’t wait to see what else you make!!!

a little break

I’m going to take a little internet break this week.  Feeling a little down, so I’m going to unplug for a while.  🙂  Here’s a peek at my apron for my spice up the kitchen swap partner.

A.J. Dub - I hear ya! That was me last week. Still a little this week to actually. Your swap stuff is really cute! Love the mixer and the trim on the apron is fab!
Feel better soon!

Lindsay - That mixer applique is the cutest little thing!

Katie - This looks great. I love the mix of linen and patchwork and lace and the kitchen-aid mixer is awesome.

Kati - The apron is so cute. Have a good week away. I agree that sometimes you need a break from everything around here.

Laurie - That apron is one of the cutest things that I have ever seen!

Kristie at OCD - Crazy cute apron!!! I want that! Might even cook 😉

Have fun unwinding…it is good to take a mini-break from life now and then, even if you stay at home!

Chris - I just found your blog and LOVE your projects! So colorful and creative. This mixer applique is adorable. I also really like the lacey trims you used. The color in your projects just pop so nicely! Thanks for sharing and I hope your break isn’t too long 😉

Chris - I just left a comment but I think it disappeared! Anyway, I found your blog and love it. Especially the color and creativity to your projects! Make your break a short one because I can’t wait to see more 🙂

Kelly Miller - I didn’t know you had a blog (until I linked to it from Melissa’s) or were a photographer!! That’s awesome! No wonder you had such good pictures of Edna 😉 I feel like we are almost the same person – LOL! Just wish I would have found this sooner for the sherbet pips giveaway!

my entire winter wardrobe looks like it belongs to a lesbian.

sleepovers

When Heather and Erik were here Will slept in the futon in Ellie’s room (working out as we’d planned—huzzah!).  He now LOVES ‘sleepovers’ and is having a sleepover with Ellie tonight.  They are so hilarious.  I am amazed at the games Will is constantly inventing that equally engage them both.  They love to crawl around chasing each other and he loves to race ahead and ‘hide’ for her to find him.  When she does she SQUEALS in delight.  Tonight he used her birthday present from Chris and Manu to launch what could only be described as an assault against her.  Ellie, sitting on the floor giggling and giggling while he threw stuffed blocks at her shouting “BOOM!” again and again.  And each time one hit her she only laughed harder.
